Types of Treatment
Problem gambling is a treatable dilemma, not a “moral weakness.” Individuals struggling with problem gambling cannot always control when they gamble, how much they spend, or when they stop. Problem gambling may develop regardless of a person’s intelligence, strengths, or values. Problem gambling is devastating for the individual, family, friends, finances, careers, and can impact other important life areas.
There are three different levels of help available, depending upon your needs.
GEAR (Gambling Evaluation and Reduction)
A confidential, educational, phone-based program to help participants steer away from
potentially harmful gambling patterns, without going to a treatment center. GEAR combines
phone consultation with certified counselors, workbook exercises, and referral resources to give
participants the tools and motivation to make good choices about gambling. There is no charge
for GEAR and it is easy to enroll.
Call 1-877-695-4648 or 877-870-0177 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to speak to a
qualified advisor. They will help determine if GEAR is the best option for you.
Outpatient Treatment
There is professionally delivered, face-to-face counseling offered in every county or region in
Oregon. This free treatment includes assessment, individual treatment planning, one-on-one
counseling and/or case management sessions, group counseling, family counseling, and
aftercare planning. For more information, call the Oregon Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-877-
MY-LIMIT. Help is also available for Marion County residents through Bridgeway Recovery
Services at (503) 363-2021.
Respite Care and Crisis Respite Services
Crisis respite, or inpatient gambling treatment, may be an option for some individuals. These
interventions are more intensive, and the individual seeking help resides, either briefly (crisis
respite) or for a longer period (residential) in a treatment facility. Individuals utilizing this
level of care must be referred from an outpatient gambling treatment program. The statewide
residential treatment program is in Marion County at Bridgeway Recovery Services. For more
information, call (503) 363-2021.
The Bridgeway Problem Gambling Treatment Program is located in Marion County and utilizes an addictions and mental health treatment approach that is individualized to meet the needs of each person.
