Adopt-A-Road Safety
SAFETY IS THE FIRST PRIORITY while working on roadsides. The following guidelines were designed to help keep you and your group participants safe.
Be responsible and stay alert. Watch out for yourself, your fellow volunteer and the traveling public.
Know the right-of-way you will be working in and dress appropriately. You must wear a safety vest at all times while working in the right-of-way.
Litter pick-up may not begin until the traffic warning signs have been placed at each end of the work area.
Work on one side of the road at a time, walk on the shoulders of the road, not on the road itself. Always face oncoming traffic while working.
Be respectful of private property.
Securely close filled trash bags and place them on the shoulder of the roadway.
Never try to remove known or suspected toxic/hazardous substances. Walk away from it and call the group leader.
Place large items such as tires, furniture and appliances on the shoulder of the road.
These are a few of the items listed in our Safety Guide brochure that you will receive each time you pick up a litter kit before beginning your clean up. This brochure is to be read before the work begins, that way the material is fresh in everyone's mind.
