Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)
Mission
The Marion County Medical Reserve Corps’ (MRC) mission is to offer disaster-related healthcare training and education to teams of local volunteers, and to provide appropriate healthcare response and interventions during times of crisis.
Volunteer Base
Our MRC is comprised of servant-leaders who have come forward to ensure healthcare needs are met during crisis or disaster. Our volunteers offer their skills for free, providing Marion County MRC and the community with expertise and direction in disaster healthcare planning and services.
Registered MRC volunteers have a good-faith agreement to assist during an emergency only after they have satisfied commitments to their hospitals, private practices, and families. Members are offered free online and in-person trainings, so they can serve more effectively during an emergency response.
Volunteers from every walk of life are critical in building regional disaster healthcare capacity. During a disaster, hospital, fire, and EMS personal become overwhelmed. To fill gaps in patient care, the MRC’s licensed professionals work within their scope of practice during a deployment, treating patients with acute injuries and providing palliative care.
However, our unit also relies heavily on its many non-healthcare community volunteers–interpreters, psychologists, chaplains, office workers, amateur radio operators, legal advisors, and others–to hold key positions within the unit. These volunteers ensure that our unit’s response to emergencies is prompt and effective by working in operations, communications, logistics, and education.
Regardless of their skillset, all of our volunteers recognize the importance of disaster healthcare, and they want to serve their community in a medical environment during times of crisis. They are also advocates for personal preparedness and engage community member in an informed dialog about disaster preparation, remediation, and recovery.
