Have you ever heard of a Library of Things? What about a Tool Library? There are numerous ways to provide access for tools and equipment that we use infrequently. We want to reduce the consumption of things that will collect dust on a shelf and help put tools in people’s hands that will use them.

Library of Things

A Library of Things is a collection of items such as kitchenware, musical instruments, and games hosted at a library that library patrons can check out with their Libraries. Some Oregon cities with a Library of Things include Hillsboro, Beaverton, Sherwood, Wilsonville, and Corvallis.

Tool Library

Tool libraries are another way to pool resources, reduce waste, and save money. Currently, Marion County doesn’t have a tool library but does have tool rental options. You can also borrow tools from friends and neighbors and some local nonprofits have tools to share.

Repair Fair & Share

Marion County Environmental Services partners with local organizations for Repair Fair & Share events. The Repair Fair & Share is a collective of volunteers (fixperts) who join together to fix broken items, teach valuable repair skills, and learn from listening and doing. The community benefits by making connections, learning skills, reducing waste, and saving money. We meet twice a year in Salem, Oregon, and welcome fixers, tinkerers, and supporters.
