Repair Revolution
Tuesday, December 8, 2020
11:00 am
Listen
Every year, millions of people throw away countless items because they don’t know how to fix them. Some products are manufactured in a way that makes it hard, if not impossible, for people to repair them themselves. Throwaways deplete Earth’s resources and add to overflowing landfills. What can be done?
Repair Revolution, a just-published book by John Wackman and Elizabeth Knight, chronicles the rise of Repair Cafes, Fixit Clinics, and other volunteer-run organizations devoted to helping consumers repair items for free. Repair Revolution explores the philosophy and wisdom of repairing, as well as the Right to Repair movement. Importantly, it also provides inspiration and instructions for starting, staffing, and sustaining your own repair events. “Fixperts” share their favorite online repair resources, as well as tips and step-by-step instructions for how to make your own repairs.

The ability to rapidly and efficiently disinfect a wide variety of buildings and outdoor venues has become a critical part of maintaining workspaces that are safe and secure for employees and the public. The need for mass disinfection of large areas is large now and will expand further in the near future. The Germ-Fogger makes this disinfection process easier and cost-effective. Born from Portland Kettle Works, experts in equipment manufacturing, they began looking at expanding into manufacturing equipment to efficiently and quickly decontaminate breweries, bars, and taprooms. The equipment is now used in John Hopkins and the Detroit school system. The design system allows sites to use cleaning agents of their own choice, including certified non-toxic products. If you a business needing deep cleaning or large surface cleaning, this may be a great place to begin your research.

What the heck is EPR and why does a Master Recycler need to know?
Tuesday, June 2
11:00 AM - Noon
Listen
A growing number of states and municipalities are looking to decrease litter, waste, and cost by putting the responsibility of a product's end-of-life back on the original manufacturer. Extended producer responsibility (EPR!) is a legal framework that not only makes the producer responsible for the disposal of their product but also encourages them to find new ways to reduce overall waste and improve environmental design.
Carolyn Stein, Executive Director for BRING Recycling in Eugene, has become a statewide leader in Oregon’s efforts to adopt more EPR legislation. Carolyn has agreed to share her expertise with our Master Recyclers (MR!) to explain how EPR works, why it’s good for the environment, and how it might lead to a more circular economy.
