Posted by: Board of Commissioners Office

This press release was issued by the Association of Oregon Counties on December 20, 2016.

County Officials Appointed to National/Regional Boards

AOC President Bill Hall (Lincoln County commissioner) has made appointments to the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the NACo Western Interstate Region board of directors. The appointments include:

    NACo Board of Directors:
    Commissioner Janet Carlson, Marion County
    Commissioner Larry Givens, Umatilla County

Western Interstate Region Board of Directors
    Commissioner Tim Freeman, Douglas County
    Commissioner Tim Josi, Tillamook County
    Judge Dan Joyce, Malheur County

"It's important for Oregon to continue to have strong representation on the boards of NACo and its Western Interstate Region," said AOC President Bill Hall. "Federal policies have significant impact on the economic health and overall quality of life in our counties, and the best way to protect the interests of all Oregonians is to have strong advocates at the table."

Comments from the appointees are below:

Marion County Commissioner Janet Carlson: "I am honored to be appointed to serve on the NACo board."

Umatilla County Commissioner Larry Givens: "NACo lobbies for issues that are very important to Umatilla County, particularly in the natural resources arena. As a member of the NACo Board of Directors I will have direct input on setting the priorities of the association."

Douglas County Commissioner Tim Freeman: "As a member of the NACo Western Interstate Region I will be working on critical federal land management issues with other counties throughout the west. Together our voices are stronger on issues unique to the west than they would be as individual counties."

Malheur County Judge Dan Joyce: "I have found over the years that NACo's Western Interstate Region is a place where I can make a powerful and positive impact for Malheur County. I appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve on the board of directors."

Tillamook County Commissioner Tim Josi: "WIR and, by extension, NACo, have always been the place where counties can go to address federal concerns and seek solutions. What makes WIR and NACo so effective is the professionalism of the people they hire. An additional benefit is working with elected officials from across the nation. We learn much from this intercourse." Josi is a former president of the Western Interstate Region.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) unites America's 3,069 county governments.  Founded in 1935, NACo brings county officials together to advocate with a collective voice on national policy, exchange ideas and build new leadership skills, pursue transformational county solutions, enrich the public's understanding of county government, and exercise exemplary leadership in public service.

The Western Interstate Region is affiliated with the National Association of Counties and is dedicated to the promotion of Western interests within NACo. These interests include public land issues (use and conservation), community stability and economic development, and the promotion of the traditional Western way of life. Its membership consists of fifteen Western states, (Alaska, Hawaii, Wash., Ore., Calif., Idaho, Nev., Ariz., Mont., Wyo., Colo., N.M., Utah, N.D., S.D.) with membership funded through the individual state associations.
