According to a study from Wayne State University, many older adults gamble for reasons other than winning money. Some older adults may gamble to distract from loneliness or boredom, while others may use gambling as a way to deal with feelings of grief and loss associated with the death of a family member or friend. Unfortunately, problem gambling may lead older adults to dip into their retirement savings or money set aside to pay for medication.
There is a wide array of resources available, including the Oregon Problem Gambling Helpline, which offers free, confidential information to Oregon residents. Call 1-877-695-4648 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To speak to someone in Spanish, call 1-844-888-2537.
Our Problem Gambling Prevention staff are available to provide culturally appropriate presentations for seniors, loved ones, and retirement community staff. We may also be able to assist with evidence-based training materials, posters, brochures, and other resources.
