As part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Mill City Historic Railroad Bridge, Marion County Public Works and the Save Our Bridge Committee hosted a photo contest capturing images of the bridge in four diverse categories: Architectural Features, Community Life, Natural Setting, and Seasonal. On August 26, the judging panel met to select the winning photographs and local photographer Judith Heitzman was chosen as the grand prize winner.
The panel also chose the following category winners: Drew Diehl, best "Architectural Features" photo; Ben Dial, best "Community Life" photo; Drew Diehl, best "Natural Settings" photo; and, Susan Sheets, best "Seasonal" photo.
Tim Kirsch, Mayor of Mill City, and Lynda Harrington, Chair of the Save our Bridge Committee, will award certificates and cash prizes at the Mill City Historic Railroad Bridge Centennial Celebration on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at 12:00 p.m. The celebration will be held at the bridge, at the corner of 1st Street and Wall Street in Mill City.
The winning photographs will be on display at the City of Mill City and Marion County Public Works offices, and will be used on the city's and county's websites and other promotional materials.
Contest organizers appreciate the generosity of Santiam Hospital of Stayton for sponsoring the contest and donating $500 to the grand prize winner and $125 to the four category winners. They also wish to thank the contest's panel of judges for giving their time and energy to the contest. The contest judges are Colm Willis, Marion County Commissioner; Dr. Michelle Pies, Santiam Hospital; Ken Cartwright, station manager and programming director of KYAC 94.9 FM; Brian Nicholas, director of Marion County Public Works; and, Todd Miller, superintendent of Santiam Canyon School District.
